Assisting farmers in identifying the most effective carbon farming (regenerative) practices in Ukraine. Minimum requirements to ensure that carbon farming benefits sustainable development.
Justification:
The insufficiency of Ukrainian scientific publications, the challenges of implementing regenerative practices at the field level, and the barriers to their dissemination hinder the collection of reliable evidence upon which to determine which practices may have the greatest impact on reducing climate change. However, based on the experience of pioneering farmers, it should be possible to identify the best options for carbon sequestration and emission reduction in each bioclimatic context of Ukraine. Moreover, to successfully scale beneficial practices, it is essential to determine effective ways to engage and communicate with the primary sector (agricultural producers).
Ensuring the sustainability of carbon farming is a crucial component of effective climate action. Minimum requirements and standards play a key role in ensuring that carbon farming projects have a positive impact on the environment and society as a whole
Objectives and Expected Outcomes:
In this group, participants will contribute to forming a scientific consensus on which practices should be prioritized for implementation in Ukraine, depending on climate zones and soils. It is also expected that the discussions will help identify key aspects to consider when developing requirements and standards for carbon farming.
The results of the discussions and analysis conducted by the focus group should help determine priority effective practices tailored to each bioclimatic zone in Ukraine. The outcome of these discussions will be a "Catalogue of Recommended Regenerative Practices in Ukraine“
Who Should Participate and What Contributions Are Expected:
Experts in soil conservation, agronomy, ecology, and climate change; representatives from farmers' associations; farmers with pioneering experience in implementing regenerative practices in agriculture; consultants and other stakeholders with practical knowledge; government officials and legislators, etc.
